Congratulations to Jeff Bagby of Pizza Port-Carlsbad, Carlsbad, Calif., crowned "Alpha King" on Friday at Falling Rock Tap House in Denver - and now the first three-time winner in the Alpha King Challenge's 13-year history! (Bagby first won Alpha King in 2005 for Torrey Pines IPA brewed at Oggi's Pizza and Brewing Co.-Vista, and won again in 2010 withPizza Port-Carlsbad's "Poor Man's IPA" Imperial IPA.) The same beer, "Poor Man's IPA", an Imperial IPA, won Bagby this year's Alpha King Challenge for the second year in a row, out of a total of 108 hop-forward beers submitted by 76 breweries.

Matt Brynildson of Firestone Walker Brewing Co., Paso Robles, Calif., took second place with "Double Jack" Imperial IPA. Dave Colt of Sun King Brewing Co., Indianapolis, Ind., won third place with "Cream Dream IV: A New Hop" Imperial IPA.
