At the contest preceding Cole's (Buffalo, NY) Third Annual Barley Wine Festival east coast breweries triumphed with a clean sweep of the awards-taking all three. The past two years had seen a clean sweep by west coast breweries. A panel of five expert judges evaluated 14 barley wines in a blind judging on a Saturday morning in February. The field was almost evenly split with eight easterners and six westerners. New York was the most represented state with six brews. New Hampshire, Maryland, Colorado and California each had one entry. Washington State and Oregon had two apiece.
